Help prepare the next generation of scientists and scholars.

About

A good experiment can change the world. However, making a good experiment takes scientific skills that cannot be evaluated on a standardized test and are too often overlooked by schools at the mercy of high-stakes tests. This is a huge mistake: experimental skills are critical tools for navigating college and adulthood.

Project

This project will teach (low-income, predominantly minority) students how to become real scientists and perform real experiments.  We will examine issues of genetics and health through hands-on exploration.  Students will research existing literature and develop their own theories, design and perform their own experiments, and "publish" their results like authentic scientists.

Class will focus on learning skills like how to assess if a source is biased, how to isolate and test a single variable, how to design creative experiments, and how to explain your thoughts and work clearly in writing.  These skills are essential for students' college success.  These experiences will also help them develop critical thinking skills that they will use for the rest of their lives.

Skills

This project will produce minority and low-income students who are college-ready critical thinkers.  Students will be able to design good experiments, judge scientific literature, and write with focus and clarity.  They will embrace their curiosity because they will have the skills to pursue answers.  They will show integrity and be persistent in the face of adversity because they will know that even wrong results make meaningful progress.  They will be prepared for college and to pursue careers in science and technology.
